Heroes of Might and Magic III: The Restoration of Erathia
-Armageddon's Blade
-The Shadow of Death
In HOMM III, "the resources, such as gold, wood, ore, gems, crystal, mercury, and sulfur can be found mostly in mines and are gathered once a day." (heroesofmightandmagic.com) The players can use these resources to build their building in their towns. Also, when they want new heroes and troops, they also need these resources.
When players' troops capture enemies' towns, they can conscript creatures of those town. For example, a player's Knight hero captures a Wizard town, the player can conscript halfling troop or Iron Golem troop while he or she still have knight troops.
HOMM III is very important of this series games. Also, when I at first met Heroes of Might and Magic, I played HOMM III:The Shadow of Death.
An interesting fact is that NWC(New World Computing, the developer of HOMM) wants to combine HOMM and another game it has, Might and Magic, together. So the story of Might and Magic IV does not exactly follow Might and Magic III, and it follows HOMM II. NWC wants to make the stories of Might and Magic and stories of Heroes of Might and Magic become one. Therefore, if you make a time line for MMs and HOMMs, the HOMM III is between the MM VI and MM VII.
The factions of HOMM II are Castle, Tower, Inferno, Fortress, Rampart, Dungeon, Stronghold, Necropolis, and Neutral. In fact, nine factions is too many, so HOMM V comes back to SIX. Actually, six is more appropriate than nine.
